Bagong Nayon II levels up in div confab ‘14

Bagong Nayon II National High School (BNIINHS) displayed winsome skills in journalism leveling up from third to second place in the 2014 Division Schools Press Conference at San Jose National High School, Oct. 14-17.

With the theme “Empowering Resilient Communities through Campus Journalism”, writers bellowed their different sides of truth through writing, photo shooting and cartooning.

Editorial writers established supremacy as Francis Arroyo (IV-Love), Jason Andrew Vila (8-Tipolo), Kristina Morilla (IV-Faith), Danbert Taopa (9-Diamond) and Beatriz Roma (IV-Faith) seized third, fifth, sixth, 10th and 14th places respectively.

Also, editorial cartoonists soared, with Rafhael Pabustan (IV-Faith) landing sixth place, John Robert Azuela (IV-Faith) gaining 10th place and Arroyo grabbing 12th place.

Furthermore, The Summit  Editor-in-chief Monique Pamintuan (IV-Faith) took fifth place in photojournalism while Sarahmae Domo-os (IV-Faith) ranked 15th. Pamintuan also garnered 15th place in news writing while Morilla landed eighth.

Pabustan sealed 10th place in sports writing while Mark Joseph Remigio (IV-Faith) got the 12th spot. Vila was awarded eighth place in science and health writing while Joshua Pio Carbonel (9-Diamond) hooked 12th place in copy reading and headline writing.

Moreover, radio broadcasters Joanna Marie Cardenas and Jasmin Andrea Julian, both from IV-Faith, reaped third and fourth places respectively as best news presenters while Johnoel Fetiza (9-Diamond) won fourth place as best in infomercial.

As a result, The Summit ranked second in overall English category. A total of six scribblers will compete in the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) on January 2015 at Lipa, Batangas.

Budiongan on BNII athletes’ performance: ‘We’re getting there’

Despite its dominant yet underachieving accomplishments in the sporting scene this year, MAPEH Department Chairman Roy Budiongan still believes that there is still room for improvement for the school to rekindle the lost glory it had several years back.

In an interview of “The Summit,” Budiongan said that though the school failed to get a podium finish during the last edition of the Unit Meet, BNII athletes still stood up as the best school when it comes to producing talented students, as evidenced by the selection of several athletes, mostly from team sports, to comprise the team competing in other competitions from City Meet up to the STCAA.

“Mas may focus ang mga coaches sa training now, at kahit paano na-utilize namin yung equipment na mayroon kami,” he said.BNIINHS has been a dominant force in Unit IV before its transfer to Unit I in 2006, but fared poorly in Unit Meet that same year, winning in only four categories.

“Dati kasi nung Unit IV pa ang BNII palagi tayong rank 1, pero nung nakasama na natin ang ANHS, DAZSMA, at iba pa, hindi na tayo mag-number one,” Budiongan later quipped.

That forgetful event gave birth to the annual Intramurals, which paved the way for the easier selection of student-athletes.

“Mas marami kasing sumaling mga students sa Intramurals na nakapasok sa Unit Meet na naging malaking factor sa pagpasok nila  sa City Meet hanggang sa STCAA,” he added.

The youthful mentor, however, revealed that the perennial problems are still the nightmares that continue to bug their thoughts up to now.“Nandoon pa rin yung mga negative factors na yan, yung insufficient training ng mga coaches, yung attitude at  oras ng availability ng mga athletes,” he continued.

But the biggest factor of all, still according to Budiongan, is the financial support the government is giving for the training and allowance for the coaches and athletes.

For this school year’s edition of the STCAA, BNIINHS will be sending eight athletes, six coming from softball, and one each for table tennis (Kayne Dizon) and track and field (Marcelino Ablao).

“For next year, nag-propose kami ng training program all about sports lang para sa mga teachers. Ang goal nito ay para dumami ang coaches ng BNII,” he ended.A perfect plan for a school that went into the shadows, but is slowly getting there.
